Submission Deadline: December 31, 2025
Artificial intelligence (AI)—particularly machine learning and computer vision—plays an increasingly prominent role in shaping decision-making in cariology. These technologies are integrated into diagnostic and care pathways to support early lesion detection, individualized risk assessment, improved diagnostic accuracy, and personalized treatment strategies. AI is now embedded in radiographic interpretation tools, predictive models, and clinical decision support systems in caries management. As this integration advances, it becomes crucial to critically assess the technical performance of AI-driven approaches and their broader implications for clinical workflows, patient behavior, and oral health outcomes.
This Article Collection aims to combine cutting-edge research on how AI-supported technologies transform decision-making in cariology and dentistry. We welcome a wide range of submissions, including but not limited to:
- Original research on AI applications for caries risk prediction, lesion detection, and clinical decision support.
- Studies evaluating the clinical effectiveness and usability of AI-based tools in real-world dental practice.
- Implementation science studies on integrating AI into clinical workflows.
- Research on the ethical, legal, and social implications of AI use in dentistry.
- Practice-based studies combining AI and behavioral data to explore patient-centered outcomes.
- Reviews or meta-research focused on the quality, bias, and transparency of AI-driven models in the field.
- Studies exploring or simulating the impact of using AI assistance to drive the decision for interventions related to dental caries.
- Replication studies in the topics above.
Manuscripts that go beyond algorithm development to assess the impact of AI on decision thresholds, overtreatment/undertreatment rates, and shared decision-making are especially encouraged. This collection aims to attract multidisciplinary contributions from clinical researchers, data scientists, behavioral experts, and public health professionals committed to responsibly advancing AI in oral healthcare.
