The development of the GABAergic system has been identified as a key ontogenetic feature of neurodevelopment for both proper formation as well as pathological events. The last decade has produced a wide range of research evaluating several environmental compounds, chemicals, neuroendocrine disruptors, etc., that either directly or indirectly alter the functional development and/or expression of the GABA receptors. These changes can be assessed pharmacologically in vivo and in vitro and may shed light on new neuropsychopharmacological approaches to developing GABAergic-targeted therapies for these neurodevelopmental disorders.
This article collection seeks to compile the latest research and insights to help usher in the next decade in continuing, sustaining, and advancing GABAergic drug therapies in reversing, forestalling, or mitigating neurodevelopmental disorders pharmacologically. These reports will seek to cover, but are not limited to, the GABA-shift, critical periods, neurobehavioral outcomes (i.e., persistent or permanent), anxiolytic properties, nootropic properties, neuromodulators, and neuroendocrine regulators regarding the GABAergic system.
The collection aims to bridge a systems level approach to ensure a comprehensive review of the GABAergic system regarding neurodevelopmental disorders. We welcome original research, reviews, brief reports, and/or perspectives.
