Individuals who use substances remain among the most stigmatised members of society. Substance use disorders disproportionately affect individuals and communities experiencing social, economic, and structural inequalities. Marginalised substance users face systemic barriers that are associated with disparities in treatment access, service engagement, and clinical outcomes.

European Addiction Research is putting together an article collection dedicated to exploring the experiences of marginalised substance users. We welcome Review Articles, Research Articles, and Brief Reports covering, but not limited to, the following topics:

  • Social and structural determinants of substance use and recovery outcomes, including psychological processes such as stress, self-efficacy, and coping.
  • Stigma and organisational barriers to treatment access, implementation, and engagement.
  • Co-occurring substance use and mental health conditions, including dual diagnosis.
  • Service delivery for racial and ethnic minority groups, including barriers to meeting treatment standards (e.g., NICE guidelines).
  • Experiences of refugees, asylum seekers, migrants, and LGBTQ+ communities in relation to substance use and clinical outcomes, including the impact of minority stress (e.g., trauma, social isolation, discrimination).
  • The relationship between substance use and socioeconomic disadvantage, including homelessness, poverty, and deprivation.
  • Strategies to improve healthcare equality, including policy reform, increased access to treatments, acceptability of services, and healthcare advocacy.
