Osteoporosis is a major health problem worldwide particularly in the elderly affecting not only the skeleton, but also the overall well-being, morbidity and mortality of the old and oldest old patients. Although diagnostic approaches and different therapies have been established for osteoporosis and are well documented in studies and guidelines, an osteoporosis care gap is still evident in clinical practice in many health care systems. Moreover, the management of the old and oldest old patients with osteoporosis remains a challenge due to multimorbidity, polypharmacy and lack of studies with very old patients.

The topical issue “Osteoporosis in the Oldest Old“ wants to address these problems regarding the diagnostic and therapeutic management of the oldest old patients. The available data on the management of osteoporosis in this age group and specific problems, such as additional sarcopenia, frailty, falls, or other comorbidities should be evaluated and discussed. The aim should be to present the reader differentiated and well tailored approaches for diagnostics and therapies for osteoporosis in the oldest old.

This Call for Papers welcomes original research, reviews, and brief reports that explore how old and oldest old adults can be managed for osteoporosis and disorders associated with osteoporosis.

Please select the option “Call for Papers: Osteoporosis in the oldest old” when submitting your manuscript and mention this Call for Papers in your cover letter.
