Perioperative blood sparing management (PBM) is an evidence based, patient- and clinic-individualised, multidisciplinary concept to reduce the need for perioperative transfusion of blood-products with the goal to improve patient safety and outcome and to save the increasingly rare source of blood products. The three main pillars of PBM are perioperative anemia management to improve red blood cell volume, measures to decrease perioperative blood-loss by interventional and surgical techniques as well as multimodal coagulation management and rational, evidence based, trigger guided use of blood products. Despite the increasing evidence about the benefits of PBM and recommendations in multiple political and medical guidelines the implementation in real world clinical practice is still highly variable and quite often completely missing.
For an Article Collection on PBM in the journal Transfusion Medicine and Hemotherapy, we call for submissions on all aspects of the topic from preoperative anemia and transfusion as independent risk factors, to perioperative measures, to the practical implementation of PBM in clinical practice.
